Iceland Information

Iceland is an island located high up in the North Atlantic Ocean on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. 
It has a population of about 330,000 and a total area of 104,000 km2. 
The capital and largest city is Reykjavík, with the surrounding area being home to almost two-thirds of the population.
Iceland is a land of volcanoes and is very geologically active.
The interior consists of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains, volcanoes and glaciers, with many rivers, waterfalls and lakes.
In spite of it´s high  latitude placement Iceland has a temperate climate which is caused by the Gulf Stream sending warm currents up along the Canadian coast. 
The weather is unstable and can change often in a day making it important what you wear.


Iceland has for a long time strugglesd with high price service sector and thus has been renouned forhas a free market economy with relatively low taxes compared to other OECD countries, while maintaining a Nordic welfare system providing universal health care and tertiary education for its citizens. In recent years, Iceland has been one of the wealthiest and most developed nations in the world. In 2007, it was ranked as the most developed country in the world by the United Nations' Human Development Index, and the fourth most productive country per capita. In 2008, the nation's banking system systematically failed, causing significant economic contraction and political unrest that led to early parliamentary elections making Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir the country's Prime Minister.
